Discover the Story of Jewish Refugee Scholars at Black Colleges at the Museum of Jewish Heritage

Open to:  Grades K-12 Teachers, Paraprofessionals, and School Administrators
Opportunity at a Glance: Join us as Dr. Lillie Edwards, Professor Emerita of History and African American studies at Drew University, shares the connection between the following:

  • Jewish refugee scholars and Black colleges based on the late Gabrielle Simon Edgcomb’s book From Swastika to Jim Crow; and
  • The documentary film of the same title, directed by Lori Cheatle and Martin Toub.

This presentation will tell the story of the Jewish refugee scholars who fled Nazi Germany and found positions at historically Black colleges and universities. The story connects racial segregation, violence, and anti-Semitism in the U.S. and Europe to Black agency, ambition, and leadership at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
