Open to: K-12 Teachers
Opportunity at a Glance: In this lecture based partly on his recent book, “The Stages of Memory,” Professor James Young will share his reflections on memorial art stretching from early Holocaust memorials through the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Germany’s counter-monuments to the Holocaust, Berlin’s Denkmal for the Murdered Jews of Europe, the 9/11 Memorial in New York City, and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama. Along the way, he will also explore his own role as juror in the Denkmal and 9/11 Memorial processes and how the “stages of memory” include a memorial’s conception, selection, execution, and reception over its long existence.
