Opportunity at a Glance: The National Wildlife Federation’s Resilient Schools and Communities (RiSC) program invites students and teachers to plant beach grass in Coney Island, in partnership with NYC Parks and the American Littoral Society. NYC students, teachers and community members have planted 61,300 plants in Coney Island Creek Park, a local estuary, since 2022. The plants stabilize the sand, create a living buffer against erosion and coastal flooding for nearby residents, and provide habitat for wildlife. This hands-on habitat restoration activity connects students to their local shoreline, teaches them about low-cost climate resilience solutions and careers.
