Opportunity at a Glance: In order to support student engagement, it’s helpful to consider the role of thoughtful student groupings in a classroom. In this activity, participants examine the impact that grouping can have on learners’ varied experiences by engaging in a close reading and discussion of the article “I Got Grouped” by Cris Tovani.
As a reminder, teachers have access to 70 Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) eBook titles. Some titles that connect to building a culture for learning include:
- Student-Led Discussions: How Do I Promote Rich Conversations about Books, Videos, and other Media? (Book 59, p. 22)
- Total Literacy Techniques: Tools to Help Students Analyze Literature and Informational Texts (Book 67, p. 29)
