Studying the Sun-Earth System Using Shadows

Open to: Grades 3-12 Teachers
Opportunity at a Glance: During this two-day online session, participants will observe shadows and plot them on paper using a shadow board constructed from household materials. They will learn how to make quantitative measurements of shadows and use simple geometry to construct an understanding about the Earth’s orbit around the sun, geography, seasons, and even the shape and size of the earth. If time allows, we will construct a paper sundial and use sundial shadows to tell time.

This two-day session is free and offers CTLE credits upon completion.
