Open to: Language Teachers
Opportunity at a Glance: Join Mitch Ingram for a workshop on the pedagogical uses of humor in bilingual classrooms—with New York Public Library’s (NYPL) Center for Educators and Schools. Ingram will discuss how jokes and wordplay are excellent conduits for emergent bilinguals to think meta-linguistically, demonstrate creative language use, and situate joy as part of the formal curriculum.
During this workshop participants will do the following:
- Learn how to lead a language arts lesson on using homophones to write original jokes;
- Dive into the multifaceted role of humor as a reservoir of social, cultural, and linguistic knowledge; and
- Discover ways to integrate jest and laughter into both formal and informal learning settings.
Eligible NYS educators will receive 1 hour of CTLE credit.
