Earn an Additional Certification to Support Special Student Populations

Opportunity at a Glance: The New York City Department of Education (NYCDOE) is offering opportunities for qualified aspiring and current NYCDOE teachers to work towards an additional certification in Bilingual Education, English to Speakers of Other Languages, or Students with Disabilities (SwD) Grades 7-12 Generalist at a significantly discounted rate.

NYC Specialized Teacher Enhancement Pathway (NYC STEP)

NYC Step is designed to be a supportive and school- embedded training program for aspiring* and current teachers with an existing base certificate to leverage their skills and experiences to meet the needs of secondary students with disabilities and multilingual and English language learners. Teacher participants will complete self-guided online coursework, and receive coaching and support from high-quality NYC DOE teacher facilitators and may be able to apply credit equivalency towards a Secondary Students with Disabilities (SwD) Grades 7-12 Generalist additional certification or Bilingual Education Extension. Intensive Teacher Institute in Bilingual Special Education (ITI-BSE)

The ITI-BSE NYC DOE Cohort is designed to support teachers of students with bilingual special education recommendations in Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) and Special Class settings. ITI-BSE is a NY State Education Department (NYSED) grant open to current NYC DOE teachers holding a Students with Disabilities certification that are interested in earning a bilingual extension. Subsidized Bilingual Extension Program (SBEP) 

SBEP is designed to support teachers of multilingual & English language learners in bilingual general education classroom settings. This program is open to aspiring and current NYC DOE teachers with an eligible base certification that are interested in earning a Bilingual Extension. Current SBEP cohorts partner with local City University of New York colleges. Tuition for teacher participants is about half the cost of comparable college/university graduate coursework. Clinically Rich Intensive Teacher Institute (CR-ITI)

CR-ITI is designed to support teachers of multilingual & English Language Learners in English as a new language and bilingual education classroom settings. This NYSED grant offers a tuition discount towards advanced certificate programs leading to credentials in English to Speakers of Other Languages and Bilingual Education at local public and private universities.
