Opportunity at a Glance: Jazz is widely described as an American invention, but it belongs to no single nation-state. We will examine jazz as an inheritance of Africa, a response to the slave trade, and a dignified gift of love and generosity in return for brutality and violence. Filtered through and influenced by all of the Americas, jazz is best exemplified as a global experiment in human freedom and triumph over oppression. CTLE-credit [insert link: http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/resteachers/ctle.html%5D is available.
