Exploring Content with Creation Stories

Open to: Grades 6-12 Teachers
Opportunity at a Glance: Humans have been constructing explanations for natural phenomena since the beginning.  One of the most ubiquitous phenomena that every culture around the world has tried to explain is the creation of the world as it knows it. Though often relegated to the realm of mythology and spirituality/religion, a close examination of these explanations reveals how themes of geography, weather and climate, and reproduction also have a presence in these stories.  Together we will consider the potential of creation stories as an entry point to standard content curriculum, a bridge between cultures, and a method for welcoming all students into our classrooms.
