Teaching Tenements: Resources from The New York Public Library and Tenement Museum

Opportunity at a Glance: Join experts at The New York Public Library (NYPL) and the Tenement Museum to learn about the rise of rent strikes in early 20th-century New York City, living conditions of working-class tenants, passage of the Tenement House Act of 1901, and progressive reforms that improved housing conditions in New York City’s Lower East Side.

Participants will learn about New York City’s Rent Strikers: Jewish Activism & Housing Reform in the Progressive Era, a new curriculum guide developed by NYPL’s Center for Educators and Schools. Plus, learn about virtual field trips to the Tenement Museum, which brings history to life through immersive experiences!
