Aesthetics as a Strategy: Using Fashion and Style as a Vehicle for Learning

Open to: Social Studies, Arts and English Teachers
Opportunity at a Glance: How can you explore complex political, cultural, and historical discourse on race, power, and identity in your classrooms?  Hear from Monica Miller, guest curator of the exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, on the importance of style and how Black identities in the Atlantic diaspora harnessed dandyism as both an aesthetic and a strategy that allowed for new social and political possibilities. Then, through a guided conversation, learn how you can employ fashion not only as an art form, but also as a cultural and political vehicle in which you can invigorate discussions with your students and their own lives.
